Baton Rouge Match Report - 2-7-09
Written by Trip

One of the oldest and fiercest rivalries in the Deep South was rekindled under the lights this past Saturday at the New Orleans Rugby Grounds. Conditions were near perfect for a 6 pm kickoff in what was the opening matrix match for both teams, as well as Baton Rouge RFC

Baton Rouge came out firing in the second half. An always dangerous backline put together strike after strike, getting into space and generally causing havoc in the New Orleans defense. Fullback Blake Arbour found a gap for five points, and wing Seth Stevenson finished a nice move to score in the corner. Rosenquist added one more conversion. Fitness, patience and determination saw New Orleans through, however. Porter added a second try, Falcon blasted through a Baton Rouge defender to score under the posts, replacement hooker David Thorburn finished off a well-handled break, and lock Chris Beacher added the finishing touch with a try inside of five minutes to full time.

Final Score 47-26 New Orleans.

In his first start for New Orleans, Jarrett Falcon earned Man-of-the-Match honors. He joined first-year LSU grads Marsh Perry and Ricky DeCastro in the starting lineup, and contributed 17 points to the effort.

NORFC Captain Kevin Kern was pleased with the fitness level (although he points out improvement in this area still, and always, needs to improve) and the overall intensity of play. “Fitness can always improve,” Kern said, “and we need to work on our midfield defense and open-field tackling in general. There were also some unnecessary offloads, but overall it was a great effort.”

Head Coach Jerry Malina shared his captain’s views. “We need to do a better job of tracking tackles in the open field and keeping our defensive pattern in general,” Malina said. “The pace of play was good, and I liked what it says about our fitness that we scored the last three tries of the match.”

Saturday’s match was the inaugural contest for the Causey Cup, named after legendary LSU, Baton Rouge and Eagle lock Bob “Big Red” Causey. Next week New Orleans’ A-side hosts Little Rock, followed by a 2nd side match against the visiting University of Oklahoma.
