Brevard Match Report - 4/14/12

NORFC Green 52 - 10 Brevard

NORFC Green (B) advances to the Division III South League finals in Little Rock

The Creole Jambalaya was well-seasoned, the beer ice cold, and the rugby red hot as New Orleans Green B side took care of business by dishing out two black shiners to the Brevard Old Red Eyes on Saturday, April 14th in front of a crowd of fellow ruggers during the NOLA men’s masters tournament.
The match started with a NOLA kick to Brevard because in the words of NOLA captain Casey Mackintosh, “I always elect to kick first because I want us to make the first big hit.”  And the hits came fast and furious from New Orleans, not in the form of bruising tackles (those would come later), but in the form of long distance tries, the first of which coming from Jeff Ahlemeyer when he received a pass from Scott Garren to make the score 5-0.  Rad Brad converted, which was the theme of the match for the often consistent kicker (RB was 6 for 8 on conversions for the day).
Steady forward play from Tony Breaux, Carter, Beacher, Aussie Pete, D. Sage, Jerry Z. and Seth “Playmaker” Magden on lineouts and scrums kept the Brevard offense on its heels, forcing them to kick the ball away on almost all of their offensive set pieces.  Excellent back three play by Rad Brad, Aussie Andrew and JA denied the Brevard offense from capitalizing on all of their attempts to kick and chase.  Rad Brad took a kick to the house after shimmying several defenders, and Aussie Andrew touched down a grubber from flyhalf Buck in the first 30 minutes of the game to put NOLA comfortably in the lead.
With no time remaining in the first half, Tony Breaux took the role at scrumhalf when Casey was tangled in a ruck to get the ball to EMac, who transferred the ball to outside center Matt, who ran 40 meters to the corner of the try zone.  Not content to place the ball down in the corner, Matt made the unorthodox decision to touch the ball down in the center of the posts, making his way there by juking, stiff-arming, and running over 3 Brevard defenders.
The second half of the match started slow for New Orleans Green but picked up after some substitutions were made.  Former LSU players Eric West, Jayson D., and Sid the Squid came onto the pitch and immediately injected energy and points onto the board for NOLA.   Handsome Joe Pa, Kiwi Mike and Todd Fitz entered the game shortly after and gave NOLA a steady rugby rhythm with their hard running and calm decision making skills.  Young NOLA players Mason Briant and Lil’ Baby Lowe finished out the substitutions for NOLA in the second half, providing a needed boost to a tired prop Jerry Z and hooker T. Breaux, both of whom wreaked havoc on the pitch for 60 long minutes.
Brevard managed to score one try and convert one penalty kick, finishing the game with a respectable 10 points against a formidable New Orleans defense.
