Renegades Match Report - 3/24/12

NORFC 44 - 31 Renegades

NORFC wins the D1 South League
On a wonderful evening for rugby in City Park, New Orleans hosted Atlanta in a deciding match to determine who would finish first in USA Rugby South Division 1.
Atlanta opened the scoring with a penalty kick after the first 15 minutes of the game were with New Orleans defending their goal.
Atlanta's Giovanni Canazza scored a try out wide and converted to make it 10-0 Atlanta. Then on the restart New Orleans stole the ball, Paul Bode crashed the ball down to 5 meter line, ball swung wide to Adam Ducoing for try in the corner.
On a counterattack, Ducoing was high tackled by Atlanta #8 Salesi Tongamoa, who received a yellow card.  NOLA kicked to touch for 5 meter lineout.  Atlanta stole lineout, but consequently knocked the ball on in the in-goal and NOLA #7 Ryan Fitzgerald grounded the ball for the try. The conversion was missed and the score was tied 10-10.
Jarrett Falcon added a penalty kick, the first of 11 points from his boot, and the halftime score was 13-10 New Orleans.
In second half a long Ryan Fitzgerald break, followed by a series of forwards pick and drives set up a short Pat Kennedy try up the middle.
From a lineout on the New Orleans 22, a beautiful backline attack saw the ball go from Jeff Reuther to Bobby Johns to Saade Bou-Mikael to Johns to the streaking Alex Phillpott who finished the 80 meter scoring play and the score was 27-10.
After the Renegades spent an extended amount of time inside the NOLA 22, Luke Waikamakama found an opening to cut the score to 27-17 NOLA.
NOLA extended the lead to 34-17 after scrumhalf Geoff Ormsby found an opening at the base of the ruck and scored from 10 meters out.
The ensuing restart reached the in-goal area, and from the resulting scrum at 50, Bou-Mikael broke the line and offloaded to replacement wing Ross Bellaci who finished the try in the center for a 41-17 score.
The speedy Roderigus Caesar of Atlanta scored a long range try to draw Atlanta closer 41-24.  On the restart, a NOLA player suffered an injury and with all subs already made, NOLA had to finish the last 15 minutes of the match with 14 players.
Bellaci added a NOLA penalty kick 44-24, and then Atlanta replacement wing scored a try from a clever kick from Canazza in the waning moments as the match ended 44-31 New Orleans.
