The New Orleans DIII Green squad hosted Tallahassee in Gretna today as its regular season march continues. Gold was off this week.
New Orleans last played Tallahassee in Florida last fall, winning on the road 37-17, but knew better than to take this large and aggressive opponent lightly.
Green set the pace from the very first play, as New Orleans kicked off and Corey Lessassier hit the receiver so hard he coughed up the ball. New Orleans took possession behind their 22.
New Orleans remained in control, though missed a penalty attempt and gave the ball to Tallahassee for a bit. A knock gave New Orleans the ball near the Tallahassee 5 and after a few forwards runs on the goal line Andrew Barlow scored in the corner. Sid Blakemore converted. 7-0
Tallahassee took advantage of some penalties and botched offloads to threaten in New Orleans territory, though strong defense and some good poaching kept them rolling back.
But, near the end of the half Tallahassee found a pick and ran it in to score, missing the conversion to bring things to 7-5.
Soon, however, New Orleans plucked its own pick 5, courtesy of Blakemore, and the conversion was good. The half ended 14-5.
The second half began at much the same pace, with New Orleans attacking and Tallahassee proving stout in defense. An protracted New Orleans run at the goal line came up fruitless, but from a line out several turn overs later the ball finally went out to the backs who exploited an overload for Sid Blakemore to score. The conversion was good. 21-5.
As penalties piled up, each team soon picked up a yellow card in separate calls and had to play a man down.
New Orleans kept up the pressure and were rewarded with another try as Jerry Zifodya bulled it over the line. The conversion was short and New Orleans extended the lead to 26-5 with time running down.
Tallahassee soon struck back on another pick for a try and conversion. 26-12
Then, from the next kickoff, New Orleans got the ball in a scrum, went wide and scored quickly as Barlow hurdled defenders to run in at the corner. Conversion was short. 31-12
Tallahassee would have the last word, scoring on yet another take-away. A missed conversion was the last play, and the game ended 31-17.
With the win, New Orleans Green advances to 6-0. Next week the squad travels to Okaloosa.
