Greenville Match Report - 4/30/11

NORFC  73 - 0 Greenville

The NORFC Gold squad took the pitch today for the first round of the USA Rugby South Finals against Greenville fully aware that the game could make or break its playoff run and its ultimate goal of a championship. The focus showed from the first whistle.
New Orleans set the pace with strong scrums, clean ball and dynamic plays. Nick Raziano scored the first try off a smooth offload from Jeff Reuther. Andrew Quackenbos made it 7-0 with a conversion.
A few minutes later, back in Greenville's territory, Ryan Fitzgerald made a fierce run at goal and was brought down just shy of the goal line. But Matt Upton was there in support to bull the ball in and score, advancing the lead to 12-0.
Though Greenville made some determined runs, the New Orleans pattern held strong and soon Raziano was back in the corner of the end zone with another score.
Reuther took a pass from a ruck around the Greenville 40-meter line, found an open pitch ahead of him and scored untouched, bringing the score to 26-0 with a good conversion.
Greenville came back to knock hard at the New Orleans door near the end of the first half. But stout defense and good ball movement saw the NORFC through. From a ruck on New Orleans's own 22 meter line, a mix of backs and forwards ran the ball up to within striking distance, moved it clear across the field to Quackenbos who juked an isolated defender and offloaded to Rob D. Hoffman who dove in, trailing defenders to score. It brought things to 31-0 at the half.
The second half opened with a reenergized Greenville drive, but again New Orleans held. And when New Orleans got its hands on the ball again it quickly put it to good use. Fitzgerald plowed through defenders to cover half the field before going to deck, and the ball went through hands to Jarrett Falcon, who stiff-armed defenders and offloaded at the last moment to Saade Bou-Mikael to score wherever he chose. He picked beneath the posts. A Quackenbos kick made it 38-0.
Just a few minutes later, New Orleans put on another cooperative show. A Raziano run on goal was stopped only at the five meter line, and Ben Benvenutti was there to support from the ruck while Matt Lytle punched it in, shaking the goal posts as he did. The kick made it 45-0 as the clock kept ticking.
It looked like Greenville might get on the board as New Orleans, playing with one man in the sin bin, found its back against the goal for a line out. But through ball retention, timely kicking and good support the team was soon all the way back in Greenville turf, where Ben Benvenutti charged in from a penalty play to score. 52-0.
As reserves came on more players were taking their own trips in. When Upton blocked a Greenville kick and New Orleans took possession behind their 40, the ball flowed through hands to Brad Guarisco who streaked ahead to score. 59-0.
And from a scrum around midfield, Mauricio Empanada Urrutia weaved a beautiful run toward the goal and popped a pass to Bou-Mikael to score beneath the posts. Conversion once again made it 66-0.
From the next kickoff, yet another solid cooperative run moved the ball clear across the field before finding Guarisco again in the corner for his second try. Quackenbos' last conversion put the final score at 73-0.
