Krewe Match Report - 5/1/11

NORFC 19 - 37 Krewe

The NORFC D2 Gold squad took the pitch today for the USA Rugby South Finals determined to win. The opponent, Tampa Krewe, was last year's D2 national champion and the game was shaping up as a rematch of last year's South Final. By the end, it was clear this is a rivalry for the ages.

The match began with ferocious energy as each side tested each other. Krewe scored first with a good penalty attempt a few minutes in. Shortly however, New Orleans pinned Krewe against their end zone and after a few bruising runs on the goal line Jeff Reuther passed wide to Andrew Quackenbos who was looped by Saade Bou-Mikael to score in the corner.

The conversion attempt went wide and the score did not stay 5-3 for long as Krewe answered with its own bullrunner try and conversion. 5-10.

After a series of strategic kicks and some fierce scrummaging, Krewe made good on another penalty kick, bringing things to 5-13.

Krewe was set up with a series of five-meter scrums but New Orleans held fast. From a mid-field line out Krewe was soon back behind the New Orleans 20 meter line scrumming again. They eventually landed a drop kick to widen things to 5-16 as the half wound down.

In the final minutes, however, Bou-Mikael fielded a kick behind the 50 and pulled off a beautiful up-and-under to score untouched to end the half 10-16.

Shortly after the restart New Orleans picked up a penalty kick, which Quackenbos nailed. 13-16.

Krewe was soon back in New Orleans territory and after a number of penalty calls against New Orleans, Krewe was able to punch one in at the goal line, converting, to up the score to 13-23.

On a New Orleans attack Jarrett Falcon hit a long penalty kick, tightening it to 16-23. But soon Krewe concluded a battering run at the New Orleans end zone with a drop goal, extending to 16-26 with 20 minutes remaining.

Persistent penalty calls again brought Krewe within striking distance, and again they capitalized with a penalty kick, 16-29.

Mauricio Urrutia hit a penalty kick for New Orleans, 19-29, with about 10 minutes left. However, with time running out, another Krewe try in the corner pushed things out of reach, at 34-19, and yet another Krewe penalty kick nailed their win down, at 37-19.

While the loss burns, the New Orleans playoff march continues at the Round of 16 in Virginia in three weeks. Today's was the last match New Orleans could lose and training resumes this week for the next big push.

The club will be digging deep to continue its advance in the nationals and needs all players and supporters to be on board for training and support to fully prepare.
