NORFC Gold 44 - Nashville 3

The NORFC D2 “Gold” squad began its playoff run in winning style this past weekend with a 44-3 victory over Nashville.

The game was part of a magnificent day of rugby and a historic day for the New Orleans rugby community, as hundreds of players, coaches, fans and supporters converged on Pan Am Stadium in City Park for NORFC playoff games at both the D2 and D3 level and the Louisiana high school rugby state championships.

With its sights firmly set on a national championship, the NORFC knew they had to take care of business in this first playoff round against Nashville. New Orleans set the pace of the game early with a try by Ross “Screech” Bellaci within the first 10 minutes of action. A penalty kick by Andrew Quackenbos gave the home team a 10-0 lead about 15 minutes in.

Nashville had the wind on its side for the first half of the game, however, and the visitors made thorough use of this advantage, kicking frequently and forcing the NORFC to repeatedly regroup on their own side of the pitch. Nashville made a successful penalty kick, but despite some aggressive runs on the New Orleans end zone the home team’s defense remained firm and blunted these attacks.

Back on offense, New Orleans made some of its own opportunities. After wheeling a Nashville scrum, for instance, the New Orleans pack kept possession on the subsequent scrum to set up a dramatic try. Scrum half Joel McLain passed the ball out to Jeff Reuther, who demonstrated an effective dummy pass before popping the ball to Saade Bou-Mikeal, who burst through a gap, drew the Nashville fullback and put away the streaking Screech for his second try. This brought the score to 17-3 by halftime.

While it was still anyone’s game as the second half began, New Orleans quickly began to pour on the points to take the day. A long Quackenbos penalty goal started things off, while a Falcon try went in about five minutes after that. Reuther, Falcon and Donaldson tries would follow, while on defense the squad allowed no more points for Nashville. By the final whistle the NORFC had amassed its decisive 44-3 win.
