Jackson Match Report - 3/12/11

NORFC 81 - Jackson 7

The New Orleans Rugby Football Club's D2 team continued their spring 2011 matrix season in winning style in Jackson, MS, while the D3 squad made the long trip to Tallahassee and improved their record to 4-1.
In D2 action, the New Orleans team traveled to Jackson and took control of the game quickly. Ryan Fitzgerald scored the first try about two minutes in and the tries continued regularly thereafter.  Jackson made some threatening runs, but one of which saw a hard charging Lee Dyson power the ball over the try line for Jackson's lone score of the game.
After five New Orleans tries and four Quack conversions (his lone "miss" was a made kick the ref determined to be off the correct mark), the halftime score was 33-7.  The second half saw NORFC continue to work the offensive pattern and wide openings in the Jackson defense. By the final whistle the score was 81-7.
A big NORFC thanks to all who traveled this weekened to help secure a pair of victories.
The D2 squad hosts Baton Rouge next Saturday to continue its matrix run while the D3 squad hosts Panama City.

 Tallahassee Match Report - 3/12/11

NORFC Green 27 - Tallahassee 5

On a sunny day in Florida, the NORFC Green Team traveled with 17 (16 1/2, if you ask Squirrel) to take on Tallahassee, who boasted an undefeated home record in matrix play.
Tallahassee came out guns blazing, attacking with heavy forward play and multiple punches straight up the middle, but the Green Team held strong. After an impressive defensive stand, New Orleans got settled in to a game of possession with neither team having a clear opportunity to score. With about 3 minutes remaining, Jarrett Falcon was able to put New Orleans on the board with a converted penalty from about 35 meters out. Halftime score 3-0 NORFC.
The beginning of the second half was much like the first half, but as the match wore on New Orleans' fitness began to prevail as Brad Guarisco streaked down the sideline to score the first try in what would be a special day for him. Guarisco's second try looked like a carbon copy of the first, with Brad streaking down the sideline to put away another score to make it 13-0. With the game still very much competitive, the backs showed what they were capable of with Jeff Reuther, Jonny Giepert, and Brad Guarisco hooking up in a 7's style try to put New Orleans comfortably ahead. This time, Falcon's conversion was good to put New Orleans ahead 20-0. As the clock winded down, Tallahassee was trying to put together an attack, but a mishandled ball led to a Jeff Reuther breakaway, who had none other than Brad "Al Bundy" Guarisco in support to score his 4th try of the match. Conversion by Falcon was good to make the score 27-0. Tallahassee was able to score right before the whistle after a mishandled lineout by NORFC. Final score 27-5.

New Orleans moves to 4-1 and a tie with Okaloosa, with a home match against Panama City on 3/19 and a rematch with Okaloosa at home on 3/26.
