GAME STATS Determined drives, a focus on discipline and sustained ball control
added up to sweet redemption for the New Orleans Rugby Club, which
prevailed over Augusta in a 30 to 11 match on Sunday in the second
round of the South Division II playoffs. The New Orleans team came into the game from a stinging first-round defeat the prior day to Charleston. Augusta had also lost that day to Jacksonville. The stakes were clear to both teams: win and advance to the national playoffs or lose and call it a season. Both teams seethed with fury at the opening whistle, but New Orleans quickly settled into the style of play it does best: dominating rucks, keeping ball possession and phase play with piercing drives by forwards and breakouts by backs juking around and running through defenders. New Orleans assumed an early 15 to 3 lead but Augusta fought its way back up to bring the score close at 15 to 11 soon after the start of the second half. The New Orleans team was able to regroup, regain the initiative and hold it for the rest of the game, racking up three more tries before the final whistle to seal the win. Man of the match honors were shared by props Matt Upton and Sean Malek. |
